Asuma Sarutobi is the sensei of team 10, which consists of Choji Akimichi, Shikamaru Nara, and Ino Yamanaka. He always has a cigarette in his mouth. It is revealed that Asuma is the Third Hokage's son, he is Konohamaru's uncle, and he and Kurenai are lovers.
Asuma is killed by the two Akatsuki members Hidan and Kakazu. Hidan used a technique such that everytime Hidan gets attacked, his damage gets transfered to Asuma as well... and then Hidan deals a death blow to himself (since he's imortal and Asuma is not). Choji and Ino took him back to Konoha, but by the time they arrived, Asuma passed.
